The Future of Women's Soccer Belongs in Waterloo Region.
Waterloo Region Football Club (WRFC) is building a professional club for the Northern Super League (NSL), connecting elite sport, youth opportunity, and community pride.
WRFC is bringing top-tier professional women's soccer to Waterloo Region, with the goal of entering the NSL in 2028. Supported by Helen Stoumbos, who scored Canada’s first FIFA Women’s World Cup goal, the organization aims to build a competitive club with strong community relationships and a lasting regional presence.
It all started with a simple, yet profound question: if professional women’s soccer exists, why can’t Waterloo Region have a team of its own? That spark set the ball in motion, driving a vision to bring high-level sport, representation, and inspiration directly to our home field.
WRFC’s vision connects professional sport with opportunities for community participation, youth engagement and careers on and off the field. As the organization grows, it plans to work with local soccer clubs, schools, businesses, municipalities, and community organizations to understand regional priorities and identify meaningful opportunities for collaboration.

The leadership team behind wrfc
Helen Stoumbos found her passion for soccer at age ten, beginning a journey that would carve her name into sports history. A trailblazer for Canadian soccer, she played in the country’s inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance and scored Canada’s first-ever World Cup goal. Today, as Founder and CEO of The GOOD Games and face of WRFC, Helen is turning her legacy into opportunity.
“Soccer has played such a big part in my life, and I’ve seen firsthand how sport brings people together like nothing else,” says Helen. What excites Helen the most about bringing professional women’s soccer to Waterloo Region is “the opportunity to inspire the next generation. I’ve always believed you need to see what’s possible to believe you can achieve it.” Founded on equity, community, and possibility, WRFC was built to bring professional women’s sports to Southwestern Ontario while giving young athletes the chance to compete at the highest level in their own backyards and showing them, without question, that this game belongs to them too. “Waterloo Region is such a connected, accessible community, and I believe we have an incredible opportunity to build something the entire region can be proud of,” says Helen.
